Doctor Muhammad Munawar "Manny" Butt, 76, of Traverse City, Mi passed away on April 26, 2019 at the Munson Hospice House surrounded by his family and lifelong friends.
The youngest of eight children, he was born in Lahore, Pakistan. He attended King Edward Medical College in Lahore and completed his residency in psychiatry at The State University of New York Upstate Medical University in Syracuse, New York. He practiced psychiatry in Chicago, Muskegon, Grand Rapids and Traverse City. He married Joanne Sharka on July 24, 1971. In 1975 he became a citizen of the United States.
Manny was a lifelong historian, philosopher and writer. He published in the fields of psychiatry, politics and poetry. He was a member of the Traverse City Interfaith Council where he participated in dialogue and community education to promote tolerance, understanding and appreciation of all faiths.
He is deeply mourned by his wife of 48 years, Joanne, his three children Corinna Dewey, Sarah Lonardo (Fulvio), and Shaun Butt, his five grandchildren Maria Giuseppina, Francesco, and Gianluigi Lonardo, and Rebecca and Anna Dewey, his sister Shamim Naaz, her children Shafaq and Amer Butt as well as many, many other nieces, nephews and great nieces and nephews.
Not even the words of the greatest poets can encompass how he lived-with deep faith, relentless devotion, quiet self sacrifice, and gentle, unconditional love.
He was laid to rest at Oakwood Cemetery in Traverse City, MI. A memorial mass will be celebrated on Saturday June 8 at 11:00 AM at St. Patrick Catholic Church, Traverse City, MI. Donations may be directed to The Father Fred Foundation in Traverse City.
